How to show up on Google Maps when people search ‘near me’

By the Plumo team · 21 October 2026 · 6 min read

When people need a doctor, a shop or a service nearby, most of them now just type “near me” into Google. If your business doesn't appear on the map, you miss customers who were ready to visit. Here is how to give your business the best chance of showing up.

How Google picks the businesses it shows

When someone nearby searches “dentist near me” or “sweet shop open now”, Google usually shows a map with a few businesses under it, before the regular results. Most people tap one of these and call, get directions or visit the website. They never scroll further.

Google says these local results are based mainly on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your business matches what the person searched for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the person searching, or from the place they typed.
  • Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, judged from things like reviews and what the web says about you.

You cannot change how far you are from a customer. But you can make your business clearly relevant and well presented. That is what the steps below do. All of it is free.

Step 1: Claim and verify your Business Profile

Your listing on Google Maps and Search is called a Google Business Profile. Your business may already have one, created automatically or added by a customer. Search for your business name on Google Maps. If you see it, choose the option to claim it. If you don't, go to business.google.com and add it.

Google will then ask you to verify that you really run the business. Depending on your business, this may be a short video of your shop and signboard, a phone call or SMS, an email, or a postcard. Until you are verified, many of your edits may not show and you cannot fully manage the profile. Verify first, then do the rest.

Step 2: Pick the right category

Your primary category tells Google what you are. It is one of the strongest signals for which searches you show up in, so be specific. “Dental clinic” is better than “Clinic”. “South Indian restaurant” is better than “Restaurant”, if that is what you are.

You can add a few additional categories for other things you genuinely do. A pharmacy that also sells medical equipment can add “Medical supply store”. Don't add categories just to appear in more searches. Pick the ones a customer would agree with.

Step 3: Fill in every detail

A complete profile helps Google match you to searches, and helps customers decide. Fill in:

  • Business name: your real name, exactly as it appears on your signboard. Don't add extra words like “Best dentist Solapur”. That goes against Google's guidelines and can get your profile suspended.
  • Address: the place where customers visit you. If you go to customers instead, like a plumber or caterer, set a service area and hide your address.
  • Phone number that someone actually answers, and your WhatsApp if you use it for business.
  • Opening hours, and special hours for festivals and holidays. Nothing loses a customer faster than arriving at a closed shutter.
  • Description, services or products, and attributes such as wheelchair access, parking or home delivery.

Tip: Set your Diwali and other festival hours a few days in advance. Google shows “Holiday hours” on your profile, so customers know when you are open before they leave home.

Step 4: Add real photos

Photos help people trust you and recognise your place when they arrive. Add:

  • The outside of your shop or clinic, with the signboard, so people can find you from the street.
  • The inside: your counter, waiting area, dining room or classrooms.
  • Your products or work, and your team.

Use clear, bright photos taken on your phone. They don't need to be professional, but they should be real. Add a few new photos every month, especially when something changes.

Step 5: Ask for reviews and reply to them

Reviews help customers choose, and they are part of how Google judges prominence. The best way to get them is simple: ask every happy customer.

  • Copy your review link from your Business Profile and send it on WhatsApp after a visit or delivery, with a short thank-you message.
  • Reply to every review, good and bad. Thank people by name. For a complaint, stay calm, apologise where it is fair, and offer to fix it. Other customers read your replies too.
  • Never buy reviews, write them yourself, or offer discounts in exchange for them. This is against Google's policies, and Google can remove reviews or restrict your profile.

Step 6: Keep your name, address and phone the same everywhere

Your business is probably listed in several places: your website, Justdial, IndiaMART, Facebook, Instagram, delivery apps. Make sure your name, address and phone number are written the same way on all of them, and match your Google profile.

If you moved or changed your number, update the old listings too. Mixed details confuse customers, and they make it harder for Google to be sure the information is correct.

Your profile has space for a website link. A good website gives Google more to understand about your business, and gives customers the details a profile can't hold: all your services, prices, doctors or teachers, menus, projects, and answers to common questions.

Make sure your website:

  • Shows the same name, address, phone and hours as your profile.
  • Works well on a phone, since that is where most local searches happen.
  • Makes it one tap to call, WhatsApp or get directions.
  • Has a page for each main service, written in the words your customers use.

Your checklist

Do these once, then check them again every few months.

  1. Find your business on Google Maps. Claim it, or add it at business.google.com.
  2. Finish verification.
  3. Choose the most specific primary category, plus a few true extra ones.
  4. Use your real business name, with no extra keywords.
  5. Add your address or service area, phone number and opening hours.
  6. Set holiday hours before every festival.
  7. Add photos of the outside, the inside, your work and your team.
  8. Send your review link to happy customers, and reply to every review.
  9. Make your name, address and phone match on every website and app.
  10. Link a phone-friendly website with the same details.

None of this works overnight. Google takes time to notice changes, and results also depend on your area and your competition. But a complete, honest, active profile gives you the best chance of being found by people near you.
