Does a small business in Solapur really need a website?

Many business owners in Solapur, Latur, Kolhapur and other towns tell us the same thing: “My customers know me. I have Instagram and a Justdial listing. Why do I need a website?” It is a fair question. Here is an honest answer, including when you can do without one.

What Instagram, Justdial and WhatsApp do well

These are good tools, and you should keep using them.

  • Instagram and Facebook are great for showing what is new: today's special, a new collection, a finished project.
  • Justdial, IndiaMART and similar directories can bring calls from people searching inside those apps.
  • WhatsApp is where your customers already talk to you, and where most enquiries end up.

But all three belong to someone else. They decide who sees your posts, how your listing looks, and who appears next to you. Often, it is your competitor.

What a website does that they can't

It is what Google shows. When someone searches “school in Sangli” or “interior designer in Pune”, Google shows websites and Google Business Profiles first. Instagram posts rarely appear for searches like these.

It answers questions before people call. A website holds everything in one place: all your services, prices if you want to show them, timings, location, photos and answers to common questions. A customer who has read it calls you ready to buy.

It makes your Google profile stronger. Your Google Business Profile has space for a website link. A website with the same name, address and phone number helps Google trust that your details are correct.

It is yours. No algorithm decides whether your customers see it. Your domain, like yourbusiness.in, stays yours for as long as you renew it.

It works when you are busy or closed. At 11 at night, a customer can still read about you and send an enquiry. You see it in the morning.

When you can do without one

To be fair, not every business needs a website today:

  • If you are fully booked through word of mouth and don't want more customers, a website won't change much.
  • If your customers only ever order through one app, like a food delivery app, that app may matter more for now.
  • If you can't reply to enquiries, a website that brings messages you never answer can hurt your name.

Even then, claim your free Google Business Profile. It is the minimum every local business should have.

What a good small business website needs

It doesn't need to be big. It needs to be clear:

  • The first screen says what you do, where you are, and how to contact you.
  • Call and WhatsApp buttons that work with one tap.
  • Your services or products, with real photos.
  • Timings, address and a map, the same as on Google.
  • A short enquiry form that reaches your phone, not an old email inbox.
  • Fast on mobile, because that is where almost everyone will open it.

What it costs

A website doesn't have to be expensive, but compare the full cost, not just the first payment. We explain this step by step in how much a small business website should cost. Plumo plans start at ₹349 a month, with design, hosting, updates and the Plumo app included, and you see a free preview before you pay.

The short answer

If people search for what you sell, in your town, then yes: a simple, clear website will help them find you and choose you. Keep your Instagram and WhatsApp too. They work best together.
